A hero of an era, Schillaci was a man who, beyond his brilliant career on the soccer pitch, was a figure who had a throne in the hearts of the Italian people.
Schillaci’s untimely passing has left Italy in mourning and left behind unforgettable memories and a great legacy.  Life and Football Career Salvatore “Totò” Schillaci was born on December 1, 1964 in San Giovanni Apostolo, a modest neighborhood in Palermo.
Following his passion for football, which he discovered at a young age, Totò started his career at Serie B side Messina, soon attracted the attention of Italy’s top clubs and was transferred to Juventus in 1989.
With his performances here, he became one of Italy’s most talented strikers.
The moments that made him a true legend, however, came during the 1990 World Cup hosted by Italy, which will be remembered as one of the “magical nights”.

Italia 90: Birth of a Legend The 1990 World Cup was the tournament where Schillaci wrote his name in golden letters in football history.
Schillaci, who started the tournament on the bench, made his mark with a goal against Austria 3 minutes after coming on.
This goal was one of the events that changed the fate of the tournament and Schillaci’s football career.
Throughout the tournament, Schillaci single-handedly created a miracle in Italy’s offensive line.
He became the tournament’s top scorer with 6 goals and won the “Golden Boot” award.
He was also awarded the “Golden Ball” award as the most valuable player of the tournament.
Although they were eliminated in the semifinals by Argentina on penalties, where Maradona, who was wearing the Napoli jersey in those years, was also in the squad, Schillaci went down in history as the hero of the Italian people.   Schillaci’s performance in the 1990 World Cup made him more than just a soccer player.
Totò, who won the love of everyone in Italy and was almost declared a national hero, wrote one of the brightest pages in Italy’s football history with his enthusiasm, ambition and finishing on the pitch.
Schillaci’s passion on the pitch and his sincerity in the celebration of goals reinforced the loyalty of the Italian people to him.
Anthems were sung for Schillaci in the city squares and streets; the crowds chanting his name were witnessing one of the most important football achievements in Italy’s history.
After the tournament, Schillaci continued his playing career, first for Inter and then for the Japanese team Júbilo Iwata.
During his career, he scored 37 goals in 120 appearances in Serie A and 56 goals in 78 appearances in the Japanese league.  Personality and Life Toto Schillaci was known as a humble and modest person, both on and off the pitch.
Growing up in the tough neighborhoods of Palermo, this young man never forgot his roots even as he rose to the top of world football.
Known throughout his life for his devotion to his family and friends in Palermo, Schillaci continued to capture people’s hearts even after he left football.
After ending his career in Japan in 1997, he participated in many television programs, mentored young footballers and took an active role in social responsibility projects.

Italy’s Immortal Legend With the passing of Schillaci, who lost his battle with colon cancer, Italy lost a hero not only in the world of football but also in the hearts of his people.
But Schillaci’s legacy will live on forever through the goals he scored, the awards he won and the unique moments he gave to the Italian people.
